When you ask an elementary or middle school student,” Why do you go to school “, He simply answers “To play with my friends”.
When you ask a high school student “Why do you go to school”; Although you expect they are mature enough to answer that they seek personal growth and preparation for their future career of choice; only a minority provide firm and serious answers about their goals and their perception of themselves in the future.
Many Students complete high school as a continuation of their elementary and middle school learning path before they go to the university, without having a clear perception of their future.
It is logical that children under 10 years old lack the intrinsic motivation to seek self-growth but it is critical to have older children relate their learning experience to extrinsic motivation only such as grades, gifts, etc…
This is not to say that extrinsic motivation is not effective, but an excess of it; leads to a reduction of the intrinsic one.
You think that we are in front of a serious problem, but in reality not exactly, intrinsic motivation could be developed similarly to any skill.
Students of all ages no exception enjoy art classes, they find them enjoyable, and interesting and join them without any pressure.
Art in all its forms gives students the intrinsic value of expressing themselves, of reaching a creative authentic solution, and of communicating with others. It makes them feel confident, authentic, and competent.
